Benita shares her Rooted in Life story

Testimonial

Organ donation is a personal matter for Regina, past Midwest Regional Director for Delta Sigma Theta. She holds donation close to her heart.

Regina’s best friend Benita is a kidney transplant recipient, and three of her siblings have been touched by transplantation and donation – her two sisters are organ recipients, and her brother is currently on the transplant waiting list. She has learned a lot about the donation process and wants to help identify health disparities within the Black community and help break down the stigma that prevents members of the community from registering as donors.

When Laveeda made the decision to register as an organ, eye and tissue donor, little did she know the ripple effect of that decision on her own family. Her decision inspired her nephew, Aundra, to register his donation decision, too.

Unfortunately, in 2012, he was involved in a car accident that took his life. While he was able to donate his corneas and several organs, one of the recipients was Laveeda’s niece who had been waiting for a kidney transplant. Laveeda and her family honor her nephew’s selfless decision while sharing in her niece’s gratitude for this lifesaving gift.
