Spotlight on Lifeline of Ohio campaign at AMAT conference
Article by Laurise Johnson, Lifeline of Ohio Multicultural Program Manager
“Buckle up! We’re going for a ride,” declared Executive Diversity Consultant Demia Kandi, setting the stage for members of the Lifeline of Ohio Public Relations team who traveled to San Diego, California for the 32nd Annual Association in Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation (AMAT) Conference.
This dynamic four-day event brought together a diverse array of healthcare professionals, community leaders, transplant recipients, industry experts and organ procurement organizations (OPOs) from across the country. The focus? Best practices for organ, eye and tissue donation within multicultural communities.
The conference was a powerful reminder of the vital role cultural sensitivity plays in enhancing donation education, outreach and recovery. We took a deep dive into discussions on overcoming cultural and scientific barriers, building trust through community engagement and developing effective approach and recovery techniques. Engaging workshops offered innovative methods to improve outreach, enhance next-of-kin approaches and refine standardized screening processes to maximize the use of recovered organs.
A highlight of the conference was the National Partners Spotlight, where Demia proudly unveiled the Rooted in Life campaign, announcing its exciting national partnership with AMAT. Her presentation captivated the audience, earning 3 standing ovations and inspiring numerous OPO representatives to visit our booth, eager to take our materials back to their organizations and ask, “How do we get started?”
