Celebrate and Advocate During  National Donate Life Month

While we promote donation all year round, April is a special time for us to spread the word in celebration of National Donate Life Month. This is a month dedicated nationally to encouraging Americans to become registered organ, eye and tissue donors, remembering the men, women and children who selflessly gave to improve and save the lives of others and to celebrate and advocate for all that is Donate Life.

With nearly 115,000 Americans – including more than 2,900 Ohioans – waiting for a life-saving transplant, we have a lot of work to do.  But, you can help! Help us by spreading the message in your community:

  • Write a letter to the editor;
  • Talk to your friends and family about your decision to be a registered donor and its importance;
  • Use social media to share our posts, let others know you are a donor and how they can register.
  • With your help, we will continue to save lives through the incredible Gift of Life!

This year, our team has partnered with several organizations to present events in Ohio from candlelight ceremonies to pinwheel plantings to raising flags across Ohio and more. Check out the list below for a full schedule, and stay tuned to our social media for more events.

  • Pinwheel Planting Ceremony, Sunday, April 8 at 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. – Volunteers are welcome to help with the planting of the annual pinwheel garden, honoring those who have given the “gift of life.” This year more than 8,000 pinwheels will be planted, each representing an organ or tissue transplant performed at Ohio State since 1967. Takes place at Plaza area in front of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
  • Front Line Awards – During April, we will say “Thank You” you to the 57 Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) Deputy Registrar locations in our service area for being on the front lines of donation. Several of these agencies will be awarded for their outstanding efforts in asking the question “Would you like to register as an organ, eye and tissue donor?”

The Front Line Awards are given to BMVs for either increasing participation in the Ohio Donor Registry or being the best in the state. The awards are given on behalf of Donate Life Ohio, representing all of the organ, tissue and eye recovery agencies in the state of Ohio.

Also during April, Honey Bee will buzz around at events, spreading cheer and saving lives, many individuals touched by donation will share their stories through local media outlets and volunteers will help register donors at various health fairs and community events.

What will YOU do to celebrate Donate Life Month?
