If you’ve been to a Columbus Crew game this season, you’ve probably seen the Donate Life booth!  We set up shop before every home game with fun activities and giveaways like hero masks and capes.

Why heroes?

Because you don’t have to be on the soccer field to be a hero!  You can be a hero by saying “yes” to organ and tissue donation.  Just one donor has the potential to save eight lives through organ donation and enhance 50 more lives by donating tissue.  Transplant recipients everywhere consider their donors to be heroes, giving second chances at life.

Heroes On and Off the Field

Our partnership with the Columbus Crew this season is centered around our “Heroes On and Off the Field” campaign.  The campaign features five players, all heroes on and off the field.

All of our heroes - Danny O’Rourke, Olman Vargas, Julius James, Matt Lampson and Bernardo Añor - are registered organ and tissue donors. You can check out our photo shoot with the players here.

Añor is also a tissue recipient and can play the game he loves thanks to his donor!

You can be a hero by registering TODAY as an organ and tissue donor.  And tell us how you define “hero” for a chance to win a pair of tickets to the Columbus Crew game this Saturday!  Comment below to enter.

Comment on this blog post with your definition of a ”hero” by 11:59 p.m. EST on 4/24/12 for a chance to win a pair of tickets to the April 28 Columbus Crew game. Three commenters will be randomly selected to receive a pair of tickets.

A hero is someone who puts others before themselves and who demonstrate the kind of caring action we should all emulate. My husband was a tissue & organ donor…and helped many people when it was his time, just as he was known for in life. That is a hero. And he is mine.

My brother is a hero. He was in an accident and was an organ donor. His heart helped someone live a whole extra year of life and many of his other organs donated still live on. It was/is a great comfort for me and my family to know he is living on through someone else and that his tragidy was someone else’s triumph. Being an organ donor means being a hero!! If you can’t save yourself, save someone else!!!

A hero is someone who does something others would not normally do, despite thinking it IS something people should normally do.
